These are the 10 best sedans 2024

Although the traditional sedan with notchback is suffering from the boom in SUVs, it is still the first choice in the luxury class – and has recently even experienced a renaissance in the compact class.

Audi S3 TFSI Quattro

While in other parts of the world even small cars are preferably bought with a notchback, a sedan is a rare sight in this country, even in the compact class above. Or rather, it was. This has changed in particular due to coupé-like, ergo cool model variants of the noble brands: sedans are now "in". The Audi A3, for example, is one of the pioneers. Here, the sedan is now even available as the S3 and RS3.

The S3 is traditionally particularly popular in Switzerland. In 4.7 seconds, it accelerates to 100 km/h with its 333 hp – a real sports car. The 15 centimeters more length (a total of 4.50 meters) compared to the hatchback version called Sportback are noticeable in the spacious trunk. Otherwise, the sedan is also a real S3: all-wheel drive with smart clutches for each rear wheel provides top traction and a lot of fun in the corners. Here, a wolf in sheep's clothing rolls into the garage for every day.

  • Drive: petrol, 245 kW/333 hp
  • Trunk: 480 l
  • Consumption: 8.1 l/100 km

BMW i4 eDrive40

Electric and sedan – that's (still) a rare combination. But in the meantime, it is no longer just SUVs that are being electrified, and compared to electric crossovers, electric sedans also offer clear advantages in terms of aerodynamics and thus range. BMW has harmoniously implemented the sports sedan theme of the upper upper mid-range in the i4: The i4 is more or less electrically what the 3 Series otherwise is: practical, spacious, but also anything but a boring family car in terms of driving dynamics. And depending on the version, it scores with a range of up to 585 kilometres according to WLTP.

The 4.78-metre-long i4 is available in the top version as an all-wheel-drive i4 M50 with 400 kW/544 hp and 4×4, but even with the rear-wheel drive basic version called eDrive35, you are really fast and economical at the same time. This has recently rounded off the model range of the mid-range electric car at the lower end. Charging the battery goes from ten to 80 percent within about 32 minutes with up to 180 kilowatts - so you can reach your destination quickly even on long distances.

  • Drive: Electric, 210 kW/286 hp

DS 9 E-Tense 225

For a long time, fans of large French luxury class sedans had to starve. But with the DS 9, Citroën's noble subsidiary DS is now letting the tradition live on. In itself, one would have to say "the" DS 9: The 4.93-metre sedan sees itself as a modern interpretation of the "goddess" DS from 1955. A detail with style: Where the original DS had its turn signals on the rear edge of the roof at the time, yellow side marker lights remind us of this on the DS 9.

The range consists of two plug-in hybrids (250 hp or 360 hp, the latter with 4×4). The basic plug-in version seems particularly coherent here: During the 48 kilometres of purely electric driving, the DS 9 feels particularly like quiet luxury, while the active suspension virtually "sees" the condition of the road via camera and reacts. And 8.3 seconds to 100 km/h is always fast.

  • Price from CHF 80,500
  • Drive: Petrol plug-in hybrid, 184 kW/250 hp
  • Trunk: 510 l
  • Consumption: 1.9 l + 16.2 kWh/100 km (equivalent to 3.7 l/100 km petrol)
  • CO2 emissions: 42 g/km
  • Efficiency class C
  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km): approx. 39.1 t CO2
  • Cost/year (for 15,000 km): approx. CHF 14,289

Genesis G90

Hyundai's noble brand Genesis can now also offer high-end luxury: The G90 sedan not only convinces with the typical extravagant sign, but also conjures up a pleasant grin on your face in the interior. Especially since you have the choice: With a short wheelbase and generous space, you can order it with four or five seats. The full lounge feeling is also offered by the variant with a long wheelbase and four seats.

Most people will enjoy the latter with a chauffeur behind the wheel. And thus deprive themselves of the experience of the superior driving performance of the G90. Because it is simply befitting of its status, it is powered by a V6 with a displacement of 3.5 liters - and because it fits the times, an electrically powered compressor drives it to a generous 415 hp. But the largest Genesis also impresses in the rear row of seats with fine materials, multi-adjustable seats and full connectivity for the entertainment program.

  • Preis ab CHF 125’900.–
  • Antrieb: Benzin, 305 kW/415 PS
  • Kofferraum: 389 l
  • Verbrauch: 10,5 l/100 km
  • CO2-Ausstoss: 237 g/km

  • Gesamtemissionen (bei 200’000 km): ca. 91,1 t CO2
  • Kosten/Jahr (bei 15’000 km): ca. CHF 24’450.–

Jaguar XF

Last lap for Jaguar's classic sedan: This year, the production lines of the XF will be stopped and the shapely luxury class model will be retired. Because: From 2025, the Jaguar brand will completely reposition itself and will only be on the road purely electrically in the future.

However, you will look in vain for prestigious six-cylinder engines in the XF: Jaguar has also been reducing consumption with four-cylinder turbo engines for a long time - and with success: With the basic diesel with 204 hp, the four-door only allows itself 5.8 l/100 km - with the top model, a 250 hp turbocharged gasoline engine, it is of course a little more. Instead, it rolls forward with all-wheel drive.

Inside, of course, it remains with Jaguar-typical insignia such as lacquer and leather. Two screens provide information and operation, the sound system suppresses annoying rolling noise from the road and in the future Jaguar will even install new functions or updates via mobile network. It doesn't always have to be traditional.

  • Price from CHF 66,700
  • Drive: Diesel, 150 kW/204 hp
  • Trunk: 459 l
  • Consumption: 5.8 l/100 km
  • CO2 emissions: 151 g/km

  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km): approx. 60.3 t CO2
  • Cost/year (for 15'000 km): 14'625.-

Mazda 3 e-Skyactiv X Sedan

In addition to the mid-range Type 6, Mazda also has a stylistically very successful sedan on offer in the compact class. As is so often the case, Mazda is going its own way when it comes to the drive: As was once the case with the Wankel engine, Mazda is now the only car manufacturer to use a Diesotto – a gasoline engine that ignites itself like a diesel. At Mazda, this is called Skyactiv X and it is also combined with an electric module to form a mild hybrid.

  • Antrieb: Benzin-Mildhybrid, 137 kW/186 PS
  • Kofferraum: 450 l
  • Verbrauch: 5,0 l/100 km
  • CO2-Ausstoss: 114 g/km
  • Effizienzklasse A
  • Gesamtemissionen (bei 200’000 km): ca. 45,4 t CO2
  • Kosten/Jahr (bei 15’000 km): ca. CHF 9’321.–

Mercedes-Benz E-Klasse E 300

For decades, the E-Class has been the model that has defined the brand image of the Stuttgart-based carmaker: classically classy, in the range for ages and sovereign in its effect. But since the generation presented last year, one thing will surprise you: because now the five-metre-long five-seater is also at the forefront in terms of driving dynamics.

One example: the diesel plug-in hybrid. This is not available from any other provider. It combines the efficiency and range of an economical diesel engine with an electric motor that gives you more pressure when accelerating and high energy recovery when braking. Alternatively, you can also drive just over 100 kilometers purely electrically - and thus cover many of your everyday distances without diesel consumption.

In keeping with the brand's tradition, the E-Class naturally follows on from its predecessors in terms of space, materials and connectivity, and the ambience in the interior. For the full limousine experience.

  • Price from CHF 86,200
  • Drive: Diesel plug-in hybrid, 270 kW/367 hp
  • Trunk: 370 l
  • Consumption: 0.7 l + 23.3 kWh/100 km (equivalent to 3.4 l/100 km petrol)
  • CO2 emissions: 18 g/km
  • Efficiency class C
  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km): approx. 49.4 t CO2
  • Cost/year (for 15,000 km): approx. CHF 16,314

Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor

Practically out of nowhere, the Volvo subsidiary Polestar has driven onto the sports sedan radar – if it is to be electric. Here you will find what you are looking for if you are looking for something in the sedan format of the noble middle class, but want to drive with electricity and for once no Tesla. The Polestar 2 is not a space giant, but it is all the more a dynamic curve shredder. Particularly popular in terms of class is the most expensive, all-wheel-drive version, which is officially called the "Long Range Dual Motor". This can travel an impressive 483 kilometres.

With 150 kW, the fast charger returns to 80 percent battery in 35 minutes. And if you have a Google account or simply a smartphone, you will appreciate that this infotainment is Google-based and uses Google including a voice assistant and Google Maps. By the way: Contrary to the four-door look, the Polestar 2 has a large tailgate as a five-door model.

  • Price from CHF 58,900
  • Drive: Electric, 310 kW/421 hp
  • Trunk: 405 – 1,095 l
  • Consumption: 19.4 kWh/100 km (equivalent to 2.1 l/100 km petrol)
  • CO2 emissions: 0 g/km
  • Efficiency class A
  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km): approx. 35.3 t CO2
  • Cost/year (for 15,000 km): approx. CHF 10,857

Hyundai Ioniq 6

Purely electric sedans are still rare on the Swiss market. This is because SUVs are much easier to accommodate the large batteries required for a long range than they are in flat four-door models. But now Hyundai is also forging ahead in this segment: The new Ioniq 6 is the flounder version of the successful Ioniq 5 with a little less space. But it clearly trumps its sister model in terms of consumption and range.

Because in the basic version with rear-wheel drive, it can cover up to 610 kilometres. And it also leads the way in terms of style: Visually, it looks almost like a sports car with its streamlined front and long and flat rear. The low air resistance also makes it a whisperer inside. And the forced charging breaks on long distances remain pleasingly short thanks to only 18 minutes from ten to 80 percent battery capacity.

  • Price from CHF 51,900
  • Electric drive 168 kW/229 hp
  • Luggage compartment 401 l
  • Consumption 14.3 kWh/100 km (equivalent to 1.6 l/100 km petrol)
  • CO2 emissions 0 g/km
  • Efficiency class A
  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km) approx. 36.5 t
  • CO2, costs/year (for 15,000 km) approx. CHF 12,658

Toyota Camry Hybrid

Millions of Americans can't be wrong. Toyota's Camry has been a bestseller in the United States for many years – but the Japanese world market leader did not want to offer its classic sedan in Europe for a long time. At least CEO Akyo Toyoda has come to his senses and since 2019 the big four-door has been rolling with us again.

The flat sedan shape plays into the hands of Toyota's demand for economy in terms of consumption: SUVs stand high in the airstream, such road cruisers duck underneath. Theoretically, the five-metre car with its 218 hp full hybrid drive is enough to produce 5.3 l/100 km – which should also be possible in everyday life.

However, the five-seater is really big in terms of comfort. With an enormous amount of space, electrically adjustable seats also on the back seat and blinds for a little more privacy. First-class travel at a budget rate, so to speak. And the big Toyota dances out every bump in the road with aplomb.

  • Price from CHF 45,400
  • Drive: Petrol full hybrid, 160 kW/218 hp
  • Trunk: 524 l
  • Consumption: 5.3 l/100 km
  • CO2 emissions: 119 g/km
  • Efficiency class A
  • Total emissions (at 200,000 km): approx. 49.1 t CO2
  • Costs/year (for 15,000 km) approx. CHF 10,348
